Accessing
All Inputs require a Unit of Measure, and these are set on each Input Calibration page. The Input Calibration page can be accessed from the Input Settings page by clicking on the calibration link in any Input row.
Overview
The Unit of Measure (UoM) setting tells the software what the engineering unit is of the time-series data that is collected. This is the engineering unit that the attached sensor outputs its measurements in. If a standard unit of measure has been selected, then the graphs and reports can automatically be converted into the desired display Unit of Measure.
For example, if you're connecting a Pulse Counter Input to a rain gauge that outputs 1 pulse per 0.2mm of rain, then the Unit of Measure should be set to millimeters (mm). If the Standard Unit of Measure option has been selected, then a graph can be set up with the Unit of Measure for the rain series to be Inches. The software will automatically convert mm to inches on the graph.
Note: Custom units of measure will be deprecated in the future. Where possible, you should use Standard units of measure. This will improve user experience when adding graphs and converting units.
Standard UoM
The Standard Unit of Measure option contains a database of engineering units.
When you first put your mouse into the standard unit of measure drop-down box, the website will show you a list of popular choices for the specific Input Type. You can also start typing any unit of measure, and the available choices will filter to show all possible units.
Measurement Category
Once a unit of measure has been selected, the Category drop-down selection will become available for selection. The available options change depending on the selected Unit of Measure. This selection is mandatory for Standard units of measure, and it tells the software what the Input is being used for.
Measurement categories group Units of Measure that can be converted automatically. For example, a Measurement Category of "Temperature" is available for both °C and °F.
Some Units of Measure can belong to different Measurement Categories. For example, mm could be assigned either "Rain" or "Level" as Measurement categories.
When a Category has been selected, it will inform the software of the type of information you are collecting. This will enable easier setup of Graphs and make the software more intuitive to use.
Custom UoM
Custom Units of measure are generally only to be used where a Standard Unit of Measure cannot be found. For example, a Pulse Counter that counts the number of chickens processed in a processing plant. The disadvantage of using a Custom unit of measure is that the software will not be able to automatically convert to other units.
